Website Builder — Plain English Definition | PSOS

Website Builder

A website builder is like renting a furnished apartment. It’s quick and cheap to move into: pick a template, drag your content in, and the platform handles hosting, security, and updates. A custom-built site is building your own house — exactly what you want, but more time and money upfront.

Builders are a genuinely good way to get online fast. The catch people underestimate is time. The platform might cost $20 a month, but you’ll spend evenings learning it, fighting layouts, and Googling why your image won’t resize. Your time has a dollar value — factor it in.

Two things worth knowing before you commit. Most builders won’t let you take your design with you if you leave, so switching later means starting again. And starting on a builder, then moving to a custom site once you outgrow it, is a normal, healthy progression — not a mistake.
